Hamburg, 17 October 2006.
Climate change and in increase in UV radiation could have strong effects on marine organisms. This is one of the conclusions of the winning team from the Dietrich Bonhoeffer High School in this year's youth competition "Research at Sea" sponsored by the ZMAW.
This year most of the five teams chose topics dealing with climate change, a problem which seems of great concern to young people. Prof. Martin Claußen, Speaker of the ZMAW expressed his admiration for the pupils' motivation to tackle the highly complex problems involved in climate change research.
Each of the teams spent a week on board the research and media ship ALDEBARAN carrying out their measurements and experiments.
The winning team from the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Gymnasium (Kira Feldmann and Sören Strohecker) was awarded the prize for the best scientific work. Under the guidance of the botanist and expert on marine algae, Prof. Dr. Dieter Hanelt of the University of Hamburg, they studied the effects of UV radiation on microscipic algae in the German Bight. They found that the algae were stressed by the radiation but did have the capacity to recover if the damage was not too great.
The pupils won a trip on the hot air balloon "Highflyer" over Hamburg and valuable books.
Second place went to the pupils from the Louise High School, who studied effects of different CO2 concentrations in brackish water and seawater.
Many of the students said that their experience during the youth competition has influenced them to want to go into research as a profession.
