NorthSouthEastWest

As the centrepiece of its worldwide campaign "ZeroCarbonCity" on climate change, the British Council, Great Britain's international cultural organisation, opened its photo exhibition "NorthSouthEastWest" in cooperation with the German BP AG, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the University of Hamburg. The exhibition will be shown at the ZMAW from 2 - 26 May 2006.

Ten of the world's best photographers from the Magnum Agency photographed images in twelve different countries, documenting climate change but also illustrating examples of how carbon emissions can be reduced.

In particular it is the large cities where the hazards and chances of climate change lie near one another: over 75% of the energy use worldwide is in the cities, and they are also often subject to the most negative effects of climate change. At the same time, the cities also harbour great potential for innovative climate protection solutions, for example with respect to consumer behaviour and emission reductions.

After Hamburg, the exhibition will travel to Bochum, Erfurt and Berlin. It was compiled by order of the British Council and the "Climate Group", an international non-profit organisation with its seat in London. Around 50 large format photos of cities like Calcutta, Mexico City and Tokio are effective visual triggers to provoke thought. Topical data and facts and suggestions for concrete steps for climate protection supplement the photos.

Dr. Patrick Hart, Vice Director of the British Council in Germany and Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and Speaker of the ZMAW, opened the exhibition officially on 2 May at the ZMAW. On this occasion a panel discussion on climate change was held with representative from business, science and policy, moderated by Angelika Hillmer, editor for environmental issues at the Hamburger Abendblatt.

Additional programme points accompanying the photo exhibition are an "English School Debating Workshop" for teachers and pupils in Hamburg's high schools majoring in English (18 May, 14-18 h) and a "Café Scientifique (23 May, 19.30 h at the Frauenkulturkaus, Hamburg-Harburg). The debating workshop will culminate in a show debate on the issue "This house believes that climate change is the greatest threat to our existence". The Café Scientifique is an informal discussion forum aimed at individual contributions to the topic such as energy conservation.

The exhibition is free of charge and can be viewed Monday through Friday from 2-26 May, 9-18 h at the ZMAW.
