The creative atmosphere in our new building in the Bundesstraße has recently been enhanced by the gift of a work of art, which Prof. Dr. Hartmut Graßl presented to the ZMAW. The picture is by one of Hamburg's prominent artists, Jaschi Klein. The work is an element in the cycle "Conferences - Out of Balance" consisting of photographs of staged situations. They depict dreamlike, surreal interactions between humans, animals and landscapes. The pictures have the effect of borderless theatre which orchestrates tragi-comic hindrance of communication. At the presentation on Dec. 20th 2005 some of the leading scientists at the ZMAW discussed the many facets of the work and associations with our scientific work with the artist and the donor. One conclusion: Scientists are also propagators of culture. As in art, creative research requires openness and courage in order to apprehend the unexpected and to withstand criticism.
