Walter Michaelis, Prof., Dr. rer. nat., Institute for Biogeochemistry and Marine Chemistry, University of Hamburg, received the Alfred Treibs Award 2007 from the Geochemical Society for his research work in Organic Geochemistry. This award, which carries the name of the German chemist, Alfred Treibs, the founder of the field of Organic Chemistry, honors those who have made „major achievements, over a period of years, in organic geochemistry. Such achievements shall consist of pioneering and innovative investigations which have made highly significant contributions to the understanding of the origin and fate of organic materials in the geosphere and/or in extraterrestrial environments.“
This was the first time since 1983 that this high honor of the Geochemical Society went to a German Scientist.
