The central organs of the ZMAW are the Speaker and the Coordination Commission.

The Speaker
The office of Speaker of the ZMAW rotates between the directors of the Centre for Marine and Climate Research of the University of Hamburg (ZMK) and of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. The term of office is three years.
The present speaker (until Febr. 2011) is Prof. Detlef Stammer, director of the ZMK.
In accordance with the statutes, his deputy is Prof. Jochem Marotzke, director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.
The Speaker represents the Centre and conducts its business. In particular, he is responsible for executing the resolutions of the Coordination Commission.
The Coordination Commission
The Coordination Commission consists of the Speaker of the ZMAW, his deputy, the directors of the participating institutions and respresentatives of the scientific and technical personnel and the students. The Coordination Commission confirms the Speaker and decides on issues concerning the ZMAW as a whole.
