Prof. Dr. Klaus Fraedrich, Meteorological Institute, University of Hamburg, has been named Max Planck Fellow for his excellent work in the area of atmospheric and climate dynamics by the President of the Max Planck Society, Prof. Dr. Peter Gruss. He shares this honor with only one other scientist named to the chemical/physical/technical section of the Max Planck Society this year.
Professor Fraedrich is director of the section "Theoretical Meteorology" at the Meteorological Institute of the University, where a broad spectrum of research topics such as non-linear system analysis, climate modeling and theoretical concepts are studied. The group enjoys international recognition through its fruitful cooperation with institutions of oceanography, meteorology and physics. He has authored over 150 publications. In addition to the Gay Lussac Award by the French government, he has also received the Max Planck Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and was member of the Scientific Advisory Board on Global Change of the German Federal Government. His section was home to the only graduate group on palaeo-climate-change of the German Research Ministry's Climate Research Programme.
The Max Planck Fellow Programme of the Max Planck Society has the objective of strengthening the cooperation between universities and Max Planck institutes by establishing strong ties to excellent university scientists. The fellowship is limited to five years, during which Prof. Fraedrich will lead a working group at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.
