Young people from North Germany have the chance to realise their own research adventure during the marine science competition hosted for the third time by the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW) in Hamburg. Pupils from the ninth grade on (up to the age of 20) can submit their idea for a research project to get the chance to take part in one of the five research expeditions this summer on the research and media ship ALDEBARAN.
Under supervision of an experienced scientist and with the help of microscopes, plankton nets and research divers the young people can then investigate the marine environment.
This year's competition takes place under the aegis of Hamburg's Senator for Education and Sports, Alexandra Dinges-Dierig. Thanks to the transmission equipment on board the sailing vessel ALDEBARAN, the research adventures will be shared with those at home via the media and the internet.
The topics for the expeditions come from the themes of the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, which concerns itself with numerous aspects of Earth System Research.
Teams of pupils from the five North German provinces can formulate a project from the areas marine chemistry, eco-tourism, marine biology, meteorology and marine physics and submit it by the 28th of March, 2007 to the ZMAW.
The new call for applications and the shiplogs of the past expeditions can be found under

A jury of scientists from the ZMAW will choose five teams who can then prepare their expeditions together with scientists from the ZMAW.
